A Newel post is an upright post rising at the foot of a stairway, at its landings, or its top.

These posts usually serve as anchors for handrails. Often the stringboards, which cover and connect the ends of the steps, are framed into the newels.

Spindles (also known as balusters) are the vertical posts that connect the base rail and handrail on a staircase. Spindles are available in metal, or wood. Glass panels are so available.
